The first non-stop crossing of the Mediterranean

On September 23, 1913, the French aviator Roland Garros performed the first non-stop crossing of the Mediterranean, from Fréjus to Bizerte (Tunisia), in less than eight hours. A Rhône model 9C with nine star cylinders, the Morane-Saulnier monoplane he used had an 80 hp (80 cv) engine. Roland Garros traveled some 485 miles (780 km) and only had 1.32 gal (5 L) of gas left in his tank when he landed in Bizerte at 1:40 pm.
