The Tour de Constance (Constance Tower) is a defensive construction located in the town of Aigues-Mortes in the Gard department. It was erected from 1242 by King Saint Louis on the former site of the Tour Matafère (Matafère Town), itself built by Charlemagne around 791. This tower was the first major structure of the future city of Aigues-Mortes. The erection of the Tour de Constance constituted a first step in the transformation of Aigues-Mortes into a strategic point with a port opening onto the Mediterranean.
