The first days of the baby giraffe
After a gestation of 15 months, the female giraffe gives birth to a calf that is able to stand within about 15 minutes and to run within one hour after its birth. It is already close to 6.7ft (2m) high. Between feeds, the mother hides the calf in order to eat and drink. After a few days, she joins other females with calves to form a nursery for protection in numbers.
