The Bayeux Tapestry is said to have been commissioned by Odon of Bayeux, Bishop of Bayeux from 1049 to 1097 and half-brother of William the Conqueror, to adorn the nave of Bayeux Cathedral. The embroidery was imagined as a work to the glory of William the Conqueror against Harold, portrayed as traitorous and deceitful. This visual book made it possible to address the entire population, most people being illiterate at the time. Probably crafted between 1066 and 1082, it spans 224 ft (68,3 m), is 20 inches wide (50 cm), and weighs 772 lbs (350 kg). Each scene has a caption in Latin, and historians believe the Bayeux Tapestry to be the first comic book in history.
