Saint-Jacques de Dieppe Church was a stopover on the road to Compostela during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Its history is intimately linked to the brotherhoods of sailors and shipowners who built the side chapels. Saint James, also a fisherman, was the first apostle to shed his blood for Christ. From the 13th century, James the Great was represented with the outfit of a Jacquet (pilgrim of Compostela): he wears the staff of the pilgrim, the bag, the calabash, a large cape on his shoulders, and a hat with wide edges decorated with a scallop shell. He usually shows a Bible as he preached in Judea, Samaria, and Spain.
