Located by the Mediterranean Sea and renowned for its exceptional sunshine rate, Marseille ranks fifth among the greenest cities in France according to a recent study by the Copernicus program, which provides spatial data on the surface of European territories. This study, based on the percentage of the total surface area of green spaces compared to the total surface area of each municipality taking into account its functional urban area, identified the wooded zones (forests), the urban green spaces (parks, gardens, and other recreational zones) and the areas of herbaceous vegetation. Marseille takes 5th place in the ranking of the 85 cities compared with a score of just over 58%. It ranks behind Nice (75.72%), Saint-Denis (68%), Ajaccio (65.5%), and Fréjus (64.1%).
