The construction of Nice's port began in July 1750 to make the Lympia port accessible to ships and replace the Ponchettes anchorage. The construction works of the dike and the first basin were completed in 1752, followed by further excavation and expansion works and the lining of the outer dike with an inner jetty. The attachment of Nice to France in 1860 marked its economic development and the creation of the Lympia basin in 1890. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Ribotti and Commerce docks were built to delimit the Commerce basin for large-tonnage ships and the Red Tower basin for pleasure boats.
