The rich history of Nice's commercial port testifies to the former dominion of the Duchy of Savoy and later the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia over the city. It constitutes a monumental and symmetrical urban composition that first allowed the development of the transport of goods and cement, then, more recently, that of cruise passengers and travelers to Corsica. The port's original configuration has evolved due to the extension of the city and the urban pressure, as well as the need to create roads and parking spaces to allow car traffic. The commercial warehouses of yesteryear have gradually been transformed into housings, restaurants, and galleries.
