Some 8,400 years ago, the eruption of the Puy de la Vache basaltic volcano in the Puy-de-Dôme department began with powerful explosions. They were further increased by contact with surface water as the magma approached the earth's crust. This phreatomagmatic phase was followed by the emission of magma by different mouths aligned on the same crack before concentrating on the central crater.
