The original entrance to the castle built by Evrard II de La Marck between 1425 and 1430 looks very different today. Although the twin towers are still standing, their upper part has undergone changes. The construction of the Ladies’ Bastion just in front of the towers in 1572 raised the entrance level from 7 metres. The towers were originally roofed and surrounded by corbelled walkways. The entrance gate, which was very high and narrow, was equipped with a portcullis, without a drawbridge. A châtelet – later covered by the Ladies’ Bastion – hid the entrance.
