The entrance to the Old Port

The entrance to the Old Port of Marseille was once protected at nightfall by a heavy chain which the Spaniards carried off during their attack and looting of the city in 1423. It was then necessary to wait for the 17th century and the opening of forts Saint-Jean (to the left of the photo) and Saint-Nicolas in 1660 to offer a worthy protection to this strategic location. In 1858, the construction of the Pharo Palace (to the right of the photo) brought the final touch to the city's maritime entrance.
