The emulation of the different manufactures

Under Louis XIV, the production of lace naturally followed the enthusiasm of the bourgeoisie and the aristocracy, and France took the lead thanks to Colbert. He understood all the profit that the country could derive from the production of lace and rationalized it by providing France with royal factories. Established in Alençon but also in Argentan, Le Puy, Valenciennes, Beauvais, Paris, Bayeux, and Luxeuil, they developed their specificities and benefited from the emulation and competition from the different regions. Normandy hence used in Alençon and Argentan the needle technique, while Bayeux and Le Puy were faithful to bobbins and Brittany had its crochet lace.
