The empty shell of a glorious past

Today, only an empty shell remains of the once-powerful Château de Montségur that overlooks the eponymous village from the top of its pog. In the 13th century, the fortress' interiors included a whole network of main buildings, passages, a stable, and many other elements that have now disappeared because of their wooden structure. In addition to these missing buildings, the castle's keep was also probably twice as high as its current size and had an upper terrace covered by a roof. More than 80% of the structure of the castle as it appeared back then consisted of wood.
