The embellishments of the Fontfroide Abbey
0
0
Founded in 1093, the Abbey of Fontfroide barely develops until after its attachment to the Order of Cîteaux in 1145. The monks who occupy it seek to return to the purity of the rule of St Benoît, who advocates poverty and architectural sobriety. But far from these modest origins, the Abbey of Fontfroide began to resemble more a castle from the 16th century, with the relaxation of the small monastic community. Italian gardens, a courtyard, and many other embellishments enrich the Abbaye at the time.
