The Ecole du Louvre

The Convention inaugurated the Central Museum of the Arts in the ‘Grande Galerie’ of the Louvre on 10 August 1793. Its objective was educational, as the museum was finally open to the public, but also didactic, for the training of artists. At the time, it was common to see painters copying the great classics. The tradition has continued since the Ecole du Louvre was created in 1882 in the Flore wing. The school trains students in the art professions. The lectures in the amphitheatre are supplemented by “tutorials in front of the works” (TDO) which take place among visitors in the various Parisian museums and monuments.
