The dome’s falcons

Many wild animals live together on the site of the Hôtel des Invalides. A pair of kestrels (“Falco tinnunculus”) has lived on the dome of the Invalides for many years. These diurnal birds of prey are best observed during the breeding season, from March to August. They feed their young with small rodents (mice, field mice), lizards, and large insects. They sometimes swoop down on one of the wild rabbits hopping around in some yards. They are 32-35 cm long with a wingspan of 68-78 cm. They fly at 20 mph (32 km/h) although they can reach 62 mph (100 km/h) in a dive.
