The discreet luxury of the CIWL

0
Designed by the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL), this Pullman lounge car (or WSP in CIWL parlance) is a day coach, in other words it is neither a sleeping car nor a dining car. In 1926, the CIWL took delivery of fifteen 1st class lounge cars, built in England, for use on the “Golden Arrow”, its new Paris-London train. The cars, like this WSP no.4018 of the Cité du Train in Mulhouse, were equipped with individual removable armchairs and small tables which, together with the precious wood marquetry and thick velvet, distil a sense of comfortable luxury.
