The glassmaker ‘picks’ the molten material from the pot furnace with a hollow metal rod. Once blown, the crystal piece is detached from the rod by a slight shock and falls onto a sheepskin which prevents it from breaking. In the past, glassblowers were allowed to produce objects for their own use during their rest periods. They would make things that were sometimes successful, sometimes unsuccessful. This was called “bouzillage”. The French verb “bousiller” (to do a job roughly and very quickly) comes from this expression.
