'The custom'

In the broad sense, 'the custom' is the set of unwritten laws which govern the social Kanak life. To 'make the custom' consists in presenting oneself, giving and receiving a gift, asking to be welcomed and to initiate a dialogue. Nowadays, this ritual of gifts and counter-gifts exchange between the guests and the ceremony master still accompanies the customary celebrations but also the births, weddings and mournings.
