From 1958 to 1968, Marc Chagall illuminated the cathedral of Metz with his creations inspired by biblical texts. He worked alongside glassmakers Charles Marq and Brigitte from Reims. Chagall's vision of the Creation holds a dreamlike side symbolized by the use of immoderate colors. It was sometimes necessary to superimpose several layers of glass to obtain the required tone. Although disappointed by the worksites assigned to him, Chagall invested himself in the realization of the stained-glass windows of the cathedral for months.
