At the Cité du Train-Patrimoine SNCF in Mulhouse, life-size rag dolls represent the various railway professions. Here, the conductor, in charge of accompanying the passengers and ensuring their safety on board the train, both during travel and at stops. It is the person who closes the doors at the start and gives the order to the train driver to start. In the steam era, the conductor was also the driver (the one who fed the boiler). The transition from steam to diesel led to the transformation of the job of the conductor, who then became a train driver.
