The common spruce (Picea abies) extends from the plains of Scandinavia to the Balkans from 2,296 to 2,624 feet (700 to 800 meters) of altitude. In France, it is mainly found in the North-East where it is indigenous in the Vosges and especially in the Jura (photo) and the Northern Alps up to 6,561 feet (2,000 meters) of altitude. It was secondarily established for forestry in other regions, such as the Pyrenees and the Massif Central.
