The alleys lined with plane trees surrounding the Canal du Midi are doomed to disappear in the years to come. They are being replaced by lanes of hairy oak and other similar species. This change is due to the arrival of the colored canker. This disease, certainly imported from the United States, is caused by a microscopic fungus. It exclusively attacks plane trees and forces the felling of contaminated specimens to stop the spread.
