The Clock Pavilion, located behind the pyramid, marks the architectural center of the Louvre Palace. Built during the reign of Louis XIII by the architect Jacques Lemercier, the Pavillon de l'Horloge was given its name only in the 19th century, when the exterior decorations of the two main facades were modified and two clock faces were installed. With its 40 meters in height, it marks the highest point of the Louvre and recalls the old keep of the medieval fortress demolished in the 16th century when King François I modernized the Louvre into a Renaissance palace.
