In Burgundy, the appellation of wines is determined by the name of a locality and a terroir, also called ’climat’. A climat refers to a plot of vines delimited by a winegrower. Each climat has its own geological, hygrometric and exposure characteristics. Over 1,200 climats covering 8,000 hectares (31 sq. miles) are recorded in the region, mainly Premiers Crus and Grands Crus.
