Akamaru is the third largest of the Gambier Islands in French Polynesia. It has a dozen inhabitants belonging to three families living in the only hamlet of the island, next to the Notre-Dame de la Paix church erected between 1835 and 1862 and attached to the diocese of Papeete. The church was built of coral coated internally and externally with lime.
