The Château du Bas of Villarceaux

0
The entrance to the Domaine de Villarceaux opens onto the surviving of the four towers of the 14th century castle, the Saint-Nicolas tower. Originally built of wood, the château du Bas (Lower Castle) was rebuilt in stone and fortified in 1360. In the 16th century, a Renaissance manor house replaced the old medieval bailey. Louis de Mornay, Marquis of Villarceaux, hid his illegitimate love affair with the courtesan Ninon de Lenclos there. In the 18th century, Charles de Tillet and his wife lived for some time in the old manor house but, following a fire, they decided to build a new residence, the Château du Haut (Upper Castle), on a nearby hill.
