The changes of the Fontfroide abbey

First founded by Benedictine monks and attached to the Order of Cîteaux in 1145, the abbey of Fontfroide begins to evolve from the 15th century. This change is due to its setting in 'Commende' by the King of France who imposes his abbots. They are most often nobles, and little concerned by monastic considerations. It was from this moment that the architecture of the abbey expanded. It emancipated itself from Cistercian austerity with the addition of its main courtyard, terraced gardens, pediments.
