The Chaîne des Puys is an alignment of eighty volcanoes that extends over nearly 19.8 miles (32 km) long and 2.4 miles (4 km) wide in the Puy-de-Dôme department. It stretches from Charbonnière-les-Varennes to the north to Aydat and Saulzet-le-Froid to the south. Formed between 95,000 and 8,400 years ago, the Chaîne des Puys constitutes the youngest volcanic unit in mainland France and features all forms of eruptions, whether effusive, explosive, or hydromagmatic.
