The Captives of America

Among the stucco sculptures of the Gallery of Apollo, there are four groups of slaves located on the cornice at each corner of the vault. These captives symbolise the four continents of the earth over which the sun moves. A reminder of Louis XIV’s supremacy over all parts of the world. The slaves are sculpted seated, in pairs, leaning against a trophy of arms. In the north-east corner of the vault, Balthazar Marsy represented the American captives, leaning against a Roman armour topped by a feathered helmet. The other groups were sculpted by his brother Gaspard (Africa), Thomas Regnaudin (Europe) and François Girardon (Asia).
