The capital of the ancient country of the Voconces, a federation of Gallic peoples settled in a pre-alpine area stretching from the Vercors in the north to the foothills of Mont Ventoux in the southwest, including Manosque in the southeast and Embrun in the east, Vaison-la-Romaine has retained privileged links with its former territory. Its status as the center town of the Pays Voconces conurbation (COPAVO) created in 2002 gives a concrete demonstration to this attachment. This community, which totals more than 14,500 inhabitants, brings together 14 municipalities of the Vaison-la-Romaine, Malaucène, and Beaumes-de-Venise cantons.
