The Saint-Michel basilica of Menton was built from 1619 to 1653 and restored in the 19th century. Its Baroque facade in a 17th-century spirit was not completed until 1819 and is flanked by two bell towers with terraces. The Campanin, to the west, dates from the very beginning of the 18th century (1701-1703) and rises to 173 ft (53 m). Designed by the Monegascan architect Emmanuel Cantone, it has become the emblem of Menton, which it dominates as if suspended between sky, land, and sea.
