The Camargue seden

The seden or Camargue lasso is the traditional gardian rope braided with mare hair. Its use is twofold, and it serves both as a lasso to capture horses in the herd and as a halter to tie them up. It is attached to the saddle thanks to a seden holder. The use of this term derived from the Latin saeta, seta (pig's/boar's bristle, goat's hair, horse's mane) is limited to Camargue. Hanging a seden and the bucrane (head with erect horns) of a bull from the manade at the entrance to the Camargue farmhouses is a good luck charm and a lesson in pride.
