The Camargue gardians

In the Camargue region, the gardian is the keeper of a herd, a breeding of bulls or horses partly raised at large and belonging to a manadier (herder). In 19th-century rural France, the gardian was a farm worker living in reed huts. His main role is to guard the bulls on foot with a short staff called the calos. The gardian also sorts the cattle on horseback thanks to a pike ending with a trident.
