The Burgundy Grands Crus
1
0
In Burgundy, appellation areas are classified according to a highly precise hierarchy: Régionale, Village, Village Premier Cru, and Grand Cru. At the top of the pyramid, the Grands Crus (33 in total) represent only 1 to 2% of the region’s wine production. Most of the white grands crus are of the Chardonnay variety, whilst the red grands crus are predominantly made of Pinot noir. In addition, the white grands crus can be found in Chablis (1) and Côte de Beaune (6); and whereas the red Corton Grand Cru is also to be found in the latter, all other red grands crus are produced in Côte de Nuits (25).
