The bronze man of Arles
0
0
The bronze man, visible in the background of this photo, is the highest placed figure in the Arles territory, which he dominates from the top of the clock tower included in the town hall in the 17th century. It is a decorative bronze statue of about 5.2 ft (1.60 m), excluding the pedestal, located on Place de la République. It was founded by an Avignonnais, Laurent Vincent, in 1555. This figure wearing helmet, armor, and shield evokes Mars, the Roman god of war, and adds to the ancient architectural inspiration of the building that supports it.
