The 663 feet (202-metres) high Tornado Tower – also known as the Qipco Office Tower – is a skyscraper with 861,113 ft² (80,000 m²) spread over 52 floors. It is located in the West Bay business district of Doha, the capital of Qatar. It owes its nickname to its hyperboloid structure, which gives it the silhouette of a desert tornado. The majority of the floors are occupied by offices, but there is also a wellness centre and restaurant area (27th and 28th floors) and a helicopter landing pad on the 51st floor. Built between 2006 and 2008, the tower has exterior lighting designed by German Thomas Emde. The lighting artist designed a programmable system capable of producing more than 35,000 variations of light patterns, including the twisting motion of a tornado. At night, the tower offers a spectacular light show that can be seen from afar.
