In the 15th century, Antoine of Hohenstein and the Mey brothers from Lambsheim took possession of the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle with some thirty mercenaries. They ravaged the region and attacked the travelers. They robbed them and threw them in the dungeons while awaiting the payment of a ransom. On October 26, 1462, a coalition formed by the cities of Colmar, Strasbourg, and Basel besieged the castle. It was dismantled as it was customary in case of rebellion.
