The close-up on the breton shirt of this boater allows to check the conformity of her garment to the number of blue stripes stipulated in the official decree of March 27, 1858 which introduced the breton shirt in the outfits of the sailors of the French Navy. Legend has it that the regulatory twenty-one blue stripes on the torso represent the number of Napoleonic victories. As for the stripes themselves, they would serve to better identify the men fallen into the sea.
