The boreal lynx subspecies living in France is the Lynx lynx carpathicus. With a size of 1.6 to 2.4 feet (50 to 75 cm) at the withers and a weight varying between 37 and 66 lbs (17 and 30 kg), it is identifiable by its short tail with a black tip, its ears topped with brushes (1.2 to 1.5 inches / 3 to 4 cm long tufts of hair) and the abundant sideburns which frame its head. Its spotted coat is very dense to allow it to withstand extreme cold and its feet are wide and adapted, like snowshoes, to walk in the snow.
