The Blue Eye of Martinique

Martinique's Œil Bleu (Blue Eye) is actually a natural pool-like seawater basin formed in the basalt rock of the Cap Ferré peninsula on the island's southern Atlantic coast. Located on the route of the Trace des Caps, the access to the Œil Bleu is not subject to a marked trail but is easily spotted at the end of the furthest tongue of land. Cap Ferré separates this route at about two-thirds between the towns of Sainte-Anne and Le Vauclin. The natural pool of the Œil Bleu is accessible after a small ascent followed by a descent between the volcanic stone rubble with which it offers a striking chromatic contrast. Long practiced there, bathing is now prohibited as it is too dangerous. Even in calm weather, rogue waves can indeed pass over the basin and drag the swimmers offshore or to the sea urchin-lined bottom of the Œil Bleu.
