The Bir Zekrit Mosque

0
The Bir Zekrit Mosque – located in western Qatar – has a simple, uncluttered architecture that is representative of the neighbourhood mosques where the faithful frequent daily. During the grand Friday prayer – the weekly day of rest in Qatar – these small mosques are abandoned for the larger ones. The Qatari authorities aim to build a mosque every 1,640 feet (500 metres), so that everyone can get there easily. From the top of the minaret, the muezzin calls believers to prayer five times a day, according to a schedule determined by the position of the sun or the moon. The Bir Zekrit Mosque has only one minaret, but more important mosques may have up to seven, as does the Great Mosque in Mecca (Saudi Arabia).
