The height of the vaults of Saint Stephen Cathedral in Metz ranks it in 2nd position nationwide after that of Beauvais. During its design, emphasis was placed on the vast stained-glass surface and its uncommon proportions. The monument has the largest glazed area among the cathedrals of Europe. Its nave is 137 ft high (41.41 m), and the church covers an area of 4.185 sq. yards (3,500 m²). A masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic, its abundant ribbed crossings and buttresses made it possible to reduce the masonry of the walls in favor of openings and windows.
