The Common Crane (Grus grus) is a large wading bird of the Gruidae family. The Lac du Der-Chantecoq in Champagne is the main site for the species in Europe, a peaceful haven of 4,800 hectares. The ideal time to observe the cranes is from mid-October to mid-March. The Common Crane is an early bird. The best viewpoint to watch their morning flight is from the Giffaumont-Champaubert dyke, located towards the southeast of the lake. Every morning, the “damsels of the lake” leave their dormitories to feed in the fields of the region.
