The Observatory of Belmont is a summit on the ridge that separates the White lake and the Black lake. It was occupied by the 11th regiment of Chasseurs Alpins (Alpine hunters) during World War One. This observation post sitting at 4,173 ft (1,272 m) received the name of Captain Ferdinand Belmont. He was stationed in Gérardmer when he was assigned to the White lake area. On December 28th, 1915, on the lower slopes of the Hartmannsvillerkopf, Belmont came under heavy bombardment. He was struck by shrapnel on his arm which proved fatal. He will also be known for The Letters of an Alpine Hunter Officer which brings the readers into the daily life of the Great War soldiers.
