The bell tower of turmoil of ‘Les Sagnes’
0
0
The bell towers of turmoil are beacons in the fog surrounding the various hamlets on the fringes of Mont Lozère, the highest peak in the Cévennes. They are used to sound the death knell and alert in case of fires in these villages devoid of churches. At the time of their construction, they also served as a call for the municipal school or as a sound guide for the lost. These bell towers are usually built on a rectangular base that tapers upwards. Some even have a small niche housing a statue of the Virgin Mary or a saint.
