The bell tower of the abbey church

In 1594, lightning set off a huge fire in the abbey church. The spire and bell tower were consumed by the flames and all nine bells melted. Among them was the Rollon bell, installed by the prelate Bernard du Bec in 1135. The bell tower was rebuilt, but not the spire. At the time of the Revolution, the bells of the abbey church were all dispersed in the region except for the fog bell, offered by the abbot Jean-Frédéric Karq de Bebembourg in 1703. When the new spire was built at the end of the 19th century, the fog bell was hoisted into the bell tower.
