The Belfry of Besse en Chandesse is the only gate built in the rampart of the city that remains intact today. A fine example of the 15th and 16th centuries’ military architecture, it slowed down the attackers thanks to its gate barbican. This small advanced fortification work protected the passage point that was the gate.
