The battle of Arques took place from September 15 to 29, 1589. It opposed the newly enthroned French King Henri IV to Charles of Lorraine, at the head of the Catholic League. Outnumbered, Henri IV took its troops to the castle of Arques, consolidated the ramparts, placed the cannons brought from Dieppe, and waited for reinforcements from England. After several bloody assaults, help came from the sea, and the long-awaited troops of Elizabeth I of England arrived in time to scare away the soldiers of the League.
