The Baliem Valley stretches over 44.7mi (72km) long and 9.3 to 19.2mi (15 to 31km) wide around the Baliem River in the heart of the rugged mountains of central West Papua. It takes its source and descends in a cascade from the Trikora mountains to the north before winding through the Baliem valley and transforming into a large muddy river which flows peacefully into the Arafura Sea 5,249ft (1,600m) below.
